The University of Copenhagen’s Faculty of Law is currently accepting applications for fully-funded PhD positions in International Law & Military Operations (InterMil). This unique opportunity allows candidates to conduct research on contemporary legal issues in a stimulating environment under the supervision of highly qualified academics.
Collaboration with the Royal Danish Defence College (RDDC) sets this PhD position apart. The PhD candidate will have a co-supervisor from the RDDC and will split their time between the two institutions.

PhD Scholarship in International Law & Military Operations – Overview:
The fully-funded and salaried PhD scholarship will begin in December of this year, with negotiable start dates. The successful candidate will be part of the wider PhD Programme offered by the Faculty of Law.
The PhD Programme aims to achieve three objectives: prepare candidates for careers in teaching and research, educate a new generation of scholars to produce high-quality independent research, and equip them with the analytical and problem-solving skills necessary for success in the public and private sectors.
Eligibility Criteria:
To be eligible for the University of Copenhagen PhD scholarship in International Law & Military Operations in Denmark, applicants must meet the following requirements:
- Open to domestic and international students
- Hold a degree equivalent to the Danish Master of Laws degree, which is a second-cycle 120 ECTS degree (two years of full-time studies) following a 180 ECTS bachelor’s degree (three years of full-time studies)
- Attained a minimum overall grade average of 8.2 or above at the Master’s level according to the Danish grading scale (See here)
- Applicants with a non-Danish Master’s degree will have their degree assessed by the Ministry of Higher Education and Science for equivalence to a Danish Master’s degree
- Showcase research aptitude through the assessment of their final thesis, publications, or academic recommendations to demonstrate the capability of writing a PhD thesis
- Possess excellent English language skills and communication abilities, including the capacity to teach and participate in PhD courses in Danish or English
